Leigh Marine Laboratory
About the Leigh Marine Laboratory
The Leigh Marine Laboratory is situated on the northeast coast of New Zealand, about 100 kilometres north of the city of Auckland.
As a field research base the Leigh Marine Laboratory has the advantage of access to a wide range of unspoiled marine habitats accessible in almost all weather. It also benefits from the relative proximity to a large urban centre and the full resources of New Zealand's largest university.
The Leigh Marine Laboratory differs from many other marine labs in that we are in effect a "marine campus" of the University of Auckland. The academic staff based at the lab coordinates and contributes to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Auckland. The eleven full-time and two part-time staff members also supervise postgraduate students based at the laboratory.
A unique aspect of the Leigh Marine Laboratory is the fact that MSc students can live on-site while researching and writing-up their research projects. PhD students are encouraged to find local accommodation in the small coastal town of Leigh, which is located nearby. We offer a close-knit and vibrant research community to a total of around 25 PhD and MSc students and about 5 postdoctoral researchers.
